Secrets of Sacred Space
Chuck Pittus
Sacred spaces, found all over the world and in every culture, are all based on
the same design techniques. Join us for an overview including the use of
astronomical alignments and working with earth spirits, devas, geomancy,
dowsing, archetypal symbols, and numerology. Author of the book "Secrets of
Sacred Space," Chuck Pettis has designed and built sacred places for the last
30 years. He is also the founder of Earth Sanctuary (www.earthsanctuary.org), a
nature reserve and meditation parkland on Whidbey Island where he has
recreated ancient megalithic monuments.

Resurrection: Legend or Truth
Rev. Rod Romney
A physical resurrection was not originally part of the Easter story. It was
developed and added later. What caused these stories to be written and believed?
Where are the parallels in other religions? What does resurrection really mean
in our day and age? Do we need to believe in a literal resurrection of the body
or is there a spiritual parallel we have been missing? Rev. Romney, retired as
pastor of Seattle First Baptist, brings years of deep inner exploration and
insight to the topic.

Moving to the Torah with Tai Chai
Cantor Ira Fein
Tai Chai is a kind of Jewish Tai Chi with the meditative movements flowing from
the contours and primordial energy of Hebrew letters, combined with original
chants based on the ancient music of the Jewish people. Tai Chai follows the
outlines of the letters as well as the white space inside the letters sometimes
called "White Fire". It is in this white fire that the deepest
fulfillment of Tai Chai can be felt and in chanting and moving together we
experience a quiet stillness and exaltation.

Seeing Space, Seeing Spirit
Carolyn Kulik
Unless we are deliberate, places with which we are familiar may mask their
potential for revelation...... Learning to 'see space' is a little like looking
under the rock that we've been tripping on, so that we can find delight and
balance in something that was obvious, but overlooked! The Dao De Jing,
fractals, brain theory, Chinese calligraphy, mandalas and body/mind
consciousness... all provide a background for simple practices to help you shift
your mode of perception at will - and very possibly, lead to more direct
awareness of spirit. Carolyn has long been interested in culture and perception,
and (among other things) has taught psychology, anthropology, languages and art.

Understanding Chinese Medicine
Robert A. Weinstein L.Ac
Traditional Chinese Medicine is a profound system of healing which has been
developing over the course of several millennia and is now growing in popularity
in the west. However, because of language barriers and cultural differences,
many people in the west have been confused by the theory and terminology of
Chinese medicine. Together we will explore the underlying philosophy of Chinese
Medicine, its medical theory and practice, the concepts of yin and yang, the
five elements, the Chinese view of the organ systems and the theory of qi and
it's flow through the meridians and points. Robert, a recent graduate of The
Northwest Institute of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, is passionate about
helping people better understand this great tradition of healing.
Sunday, June 1
Emanuel Swedenborg and the New Spirituality
Rev. Paul Martin
Swedenborg's descriptions of his experiences of the spiritual worlds have led
the way to a whole new understanding of spirituality and religion. Swedenborg
was an 18th century scientist and mystic whose writings inspired William James,
Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry and William James, Carl Jung, the transcendentalists
and founders of Unity and Religious Science. This talk will include an overview,
the integration of Swedenborg's ideas into our culture and what this all means
to the future of religion and spirituality. Paul is a Swedenborgian minister and
founder/Director of Stonehouse.

Meditation, The Power of Thought, and Peace
Willamay Pym
As individuals we are inclined to think that our input has no effect on world
events. This afternoon we will discuss alternatives to that view. Bring your
ideas to share with the group. Willamay, a member and worker for the
Theosophical Society for 68 years, will lead the discussion and share her
perspectives.

The Egg of Creation
Sue Prescott
Creation myths from around the world have traditionally used the egg as a
metaphor to describe the process of manifestation. Sue Prescott, MSW, will
explore the meaning behind the symbolism in cultural legends that include native
tribal folklore, nursery rhymes like Mother Goose, the Stanzas of Dzyan that
H.P. Blavatsky writes of in the Secret Doctrine, and traditional religious
teachings. Sue has written a book entitled Realizing the Self Within, in which
she explains practical ways the concepts of spirituality can be applied to
relationships and a person's own self improvement.

Seeing the Sacred in Nature's Electromagnetic Undercurrent
Of the four physical forces of nature, it is the electromagnetic force that activates all of chemistry and biology. This means that this force ultimately underlies and energizes all of earthly nature from rocks to plants and animals, including humans and their brains. Dr Fagg maintains that this universality of electromagnetic phenomena on earth is a compelling physical analogy to the universality of God's indwelling or immanence. Among other subjects, he will discuss how the diverse properties of light continues to provide sustenance from the sun and knowledge of the cosmos as well as serving as a symbol of divine presence in religions throughout the world.
Saturday, April 5
3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Are There Intimations of Divine Transcendence in the Physical World
Complementing the previous lecture, Dr. Fagg here, in contrast to addressing the
question of divine immanence, will explore perceptions of divine transcendence,
that is, the sense of God as the encompassing Other. He will show how the finite
speed f light and the counter-intuitive phenomenon known as quantum non-locality
suggest a non-temporal, non-spatial medium that could serve as a physical analog
for divine transcendence. He emphasizes that our yearning for transcendence can
be considered as a primal way of connecting us to God.
Sunday, April 6
4:00 am - 5:30 pm
Parallel Themes in Physical and Religious Time
Dr. Fagg will describe perceptions of time in modern physics and the major world
religions. The big bang cosmology will be described in conjunction with selected
creation myths. An examination of the advance of time at the atomic level will
be viewed in parallel with spiritual insights about time from religious
scholars. Conceptions of eternity in world religions will be treated along with
suggestions of timelessness to be found in the world of physics and cosmology.
He posits that the advance of time on earth can best be understood as becoming.
Lawrence Fagg, PhD. has advanced degrees in
both physics and religion. His professional career was spent mostly at the Naval
Research Laboratory and at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.
He performed experiments in nuclear physics using particle accelerators
worldwide. His work is widely published. He is also an Academic Fellow and
former VP of the Institute on Religion in an Age of Science and the author of
some 30 publications in science and religion. The subject matter of these
lectures has been presented in the US, Canada, Germany, Italy, Holland, Denmark,
Poland and China.

New Dimensions of Consciousness, Part II: From Exclusive to Inclusive on
the Multi-Faith Path
With Rabbi Ted Falcon; Jamal Rahman; & Rev. Rod Romney
Suggested Donation: $45-$65 (Lunch included)
Pre-registration through the Quest Bookshop (206 323-4281) is necessary due to the popularity of the speakers, timeliness of the topic; and limitations of space (Please call to register)
The faith we follow may be more determined by
family and culture than personal choice. Yet the scriptures and traditions of
the faiths we are exploring here all contain elements of
"exclusivity", claims to being the one and only path. This attitude
can lead to divisiveness, separation from our fellow human beings, disregard for
their sufferings, war. In a topic made timely by today's headlines, the
resurgence of fundamentalism, and a lack of compassion for the humanity of those
who worship differently, we will explore alternative scriptural and life style
possibilities.
The three presenters - all deeply established in their own faiths - have
personally experienced the mystical union which underlies and unites all
authentic traditions. They will share parts of their personal journeys. We will
listen to and re-interpret those texts in the Koran, Torah, and Bible which can
be used to estrange spiritual pilgrims from one another; looking also at texts
that have always supported the commonality of the process. We will share
rituals, music, and movement from all three traditions as vital to uniting in
the spirit, the aspect of our being beyond words. We will open our hearts and
minds to the shared experience. There will be time for questions.
There is no need to have been at the first
workshop to fully participate in this one. We are exploring as we grow.
