A Performance :    Bharatanatyam  - The Classical Dance of South India

·         Bharatanatyam is a classical dance form that has been practiced for ages in Southern India. The art form is linked inseparably to the Gods and mythology, to customs and traditions, to carnatic music, poetry and sculpture.

·         Bharatanatyam is a devotional dance. It was originally performed by artists of the ‘Isai Vallalar’ community in temples and courts of kings. The artists of this community were well versed in literature, music, percussion, dance and stage decoration. They were composers, choreographers and performers.

·         The Performers: Subhashini & Krissy have each trained in this art form and it is their endeavor to spread the knowledge and joy of this beautiful art through their dancing. They will demonstrate and explain the meaning of the gestures and of the various dance items prior to dancing each piece.

Krissy studied intensively at the Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society for 3 years with Sitaravamma Sandrasegaran. She also studied privately in Chennai (Madras), India with Janardhanan-Sir of Kalakshetra College.

Subhashini learned this tradition entirely in India, particularly in Chennai. Her training started when she was nine. She would go to class three days a week and trained with different teachers. When she had learned enough items and knew them well enough, she was put on stage. Her first performance was for over two and a half hours in 1988. Since then she has performed many times on different platforms.

There is a strong historical bond between Kalakshetra College, the revival of Bharatanatyam in the 20th century, and the Theosophical Society center in Chennai. Krissy & Subhashini are honored and grateful to be dancing for the Theosophical Society here in Seattle.

Suggested Donation: $10.00

THE WORLD IS A STAGE
Willamay Pym      Back to top

Based on this statement from Shakespeare, we will examine what this stage is all about, what our roles are on it and how we might want to change the way we play our parts. Willamay Pym, lifelong member of the Theosophical Society, a former national vice president, and regular Wednesday bookshop volunteer, will explore with us the implications of this concept.

THE CHRISTINA NOBLE FOUNDATION: COMPASSION IN ACTION
Rolf Eriksen       Back to top

From a life of poverty and abuse in Ireland, Christina Noble was drawn to the orphans of Viet Nam where her determination and compassion has transformed the lives of thousands of children. Her work has now reached the children of Mongolia as well.

Through video and narrative, Rolf leads us through this dramatic story of spiritual values that transform life and bring joy in a ravaged section of the world. Inspired by a visit to her orphanage, Rolf – a longtime Indralaya affiliate – and his daughter have committed themselves to a support of Christina’s work.
